Video hosting website, YouTube has added a unskippable 6 seconds ad video to all YouTube videos. So, bade farewell to the era of skipping videos at will.
YouTube’s Product Manager Zach Lupei, posted the news of the 6 seconds ad onAdwords blog. The post explained how the new 6 second unskippable ad came about. It is owed to “a recent research, which showed that half of 18-49 year olds turn to their mobile device first to watch video. Even in the living room, many people prefer to watch on their smartphone – for the control, personalization and ease it offers. And as viewing habits change, we are working to introduce new formats adapted to these habits. That’s why today we’re announcing Bumper ads – a new six-second video format, sold through the AAdWord auction on a CPM basis. Bumper ads are ideal for driving incremental reach and frequency, especially on mobile, where “snackable videos” perform well.”
This new ad system will take effect in May, and from what can be deduced from the blog post, it seems the 6 seconds ad is targeted at mobile and tablet users. For what it is worth, I think it isn’t so bad, 6 seconds is quite short and can be overlooked for the price of free video streaming. However, if don’t want to see any ad, you can always opt out of the ads by subscrubing to Google Play Music/YouTube Red subscription; the latter costs $10. What is your opinion?
